Sunhead of 1617

Canal House Inn

Our Canal House Inn

We named our inn after the gable stone showing a smiling sun. This gable stone dates back to the year our house was built in 1617.

When we bought the house in 1993 we had it fully renovated and prepared it for the inn we always wanted to run. Recently we renovated the rooms again so that we can guarantee modern comfort in this building that is almost 400 years old.

On the prestigious Herengracht canal

The 17th century canal district is now a Unesco world heritage site: a unique experiment in large scale city planning which has kept its beauty and charm over the centuries. Sunhead Canal House Inn, was built in 1617 as part of these city extensions and is one of the oldest historical canal houses on the Herengracht.

Our location is absolutely the best possible in Amsterdam. You cannot have a better location the ours. When staying with us you can walk to each and every destination and so safe time and money so you can enjoy our beautiful city to the utmost.

A cozy sitting room

From 4 - 6.30 PM we open the downstairs sitting room for our guests to have a place to meet each other and us and 'lounge'. We will serve complimentary drinks and snacks.

We stopped serving breakfast at our place. Our guests can have breakfast at Baton, a very lovely coffee place around the corner from us.

Recommended by guests and professionals

For years the Michelin Guide suggests Sunhead as an accommodation ‘to make a detour for’. We also have recommendations from Conde-Nast Travel Magazine, 1000 Things to See Before you Die, Eyewitness Guide, The Amsterdam Rough Guide, The Telegraph UK, The New York Times and many others.

We are most proud of the recommendations of our satisfied guests on Tripadvisor.
